WS#7: Women of Whiskey


Gena and Ellen introduced us to some of the finest whiskies made by women, or in honor of women - a category growing by the year.

1. Wyoming Whiskey Small Batch Bourbon
88 proof. Five years. From Kirby, Wyoming.
The original, flagship spirit from whiskey couple Kate and Brad Mead, produced with local ingredients and a mash bill of 68% corn, 20% wheat and 12% malted barley.

2. Saint Liberty Bertie's Bear Gulch Bourbon
87 proof. Four years. Crafted in Texas, cut to proof with Montana Rocky Mountain waters. Saint Liberty celebrates America's women pioneers in whiskey during Prohibition - the bootleggers who helped safeguard the freedom to imbibe. Mash bill for this one is 70% corn, 27.5% rye, 2.5% malted barley.

3. George Dickel Bottled in Bond
100 proof. 13 years (distilled in 2005)
Limited Release (2019), from Dickel's General Manager and Distiller Nicole Austin. Mash bill of 84% corn, 8% rye and 8% malted barley. $40

4. Cardhu Gold Reserve Game of Thrones House Targaryen Single Malt Scotch Whisky
80 proof. No Age Statement. Speyside, Scotland. Cardhu was for many years run by co-founder Helen Cumming and her daughter-in-law Elizabeth. This whisky was produced in celebration of legendary women, in the Seven Kingdoms and in Scotland. The majority of Cardhu's spirit goes into making Johnnie Walker.

5. Milam & Greene Triple Cask Straight Bourbon
80 proof. Texas (and Tennessee). A blend of three straight bourbon whiskeys - 2-3 year Texas bourbon (with a mash bill of 70% Texas corn, 22% Pacific Northwest malted rye from Oregon and Washington, and 8% Wyoming barley), 3-4 year Tennessee whiskies, and 10-11 year Tennessee whiskies. The team behind Milam & Greene include Marsha Milam, Heather Greene, and Marlene Holmes.
